Motorcycle friendly?

topic posted Mon, February 11, 2008 - 3:54 PM by  Aaron
So... after some soul searching I've finally decided that I'm moving to Midtown from Roseville.

I haven't been living in the area for too horribly long so I was hoping for some pointers. What I'm wondering is how motorcycle friendly is Sac?

I really don't see that many other urban bikers here, is it uncommon? Parking seems a bit scarce too, a few apartments that I've seen so far at least have some protected parking or spots that only a bike could fit into so I don't think that finding a home base will be a problem but other places might be. I'd just hate to see my bike run over, again...

I would totally ride a bicycle if the time and distances were different between work and school, but I can't so a bike is the next economical choice for me.

Any thoughts?

Pretty motorcycle friendly, I'd say. I don't see a ton of urban bikers but they exist. Parking on the street is easier with a motorbike, as you can fit into street spaces a car can't, but parking in the central city is pretty bad compared to Roseville.
There are a lot of urban scooter/moped drivers, and a lot of bikers turn up in Old Sacramento pretty regularly.

Cool, thanks for the heads up man. My main worry is that in certain places people give you the evil eye for parking in makeshift spots or sharing lanes, but it all depends on the local etiquette. Just tryin' to feel things out I guess.

I don't like motorcycles really.. but I have noticed an increase in parking spaces for them around town. I think there might be meterd parking spaces for them downtown.

Sorry to hear that you don't like bikes though. I do realize that they're not everyone's favorite mode of transport, for a few reasons.

I thik that they are great as an economical and less bulky form of transportation. What I dislike is the poor etiquette that I have observed of some bikers. An example would be temporary damage to my hearing because due to noise pollution. I also don't care for those who drive bikes carelessly along our streets and freeways.

Whoa, hearing damage? I’ve had some conversations halted and music drowned out before but never that. Believe me, I’m with you in regards to that. It kinda peeves me that hog riders get away with tailpipe noise levels higher than most race bikes.

As for the reckless types, more responsible bikers call those guys “squid” or “squiddies”. Wiki it, its kinda funny and it shows that at least some of us discourage that kind of behavior.

Your thinking of morons on Hardleys, not street bikes.

As for parking downtown, I don't consider it friendly because they will ticket you if you park on the sidewalk, even if the bike is tucked away.

I have seen metered parking. I think near the Capitol and on J street. I suggest you bill the city for any tickets you have recieved due to a lack of parking spaces for your mode of transportation.

Hmmm . . . good to know. Just moved back from Colorado, and didn't have a bike when I left. Although I have to say, I've actually been surprised at the "missing" numbers of riders on the road. Fifty degree weather is GREAT for riding! It is weird tho' riding around city streets and knowing that there isn't any real "open" areas for miles . . . I'm way more cautious right now, but that will probably get better with time : ).

And yeah, them "Harleys" are noisy (not an overall fan myself), however, the real idiots (sorry folks . . . no offense . . . but they're not the brightest penny in the purse) that I've seen on the roads are sport/street riders . . . like the three we had weaving in and out of lanes and traffic on Monday coming down from Reno - while traffic was moving . . . or the other half-wit that decided to pop a wheelie going down the road and literally "hang" his front wheel over the tail end of a car that he ran up on.

As much as I may not like Harleys, I'll take a noisy Harley rider over a sport/street rider any time. I've lost several friends to similar stupid stunts. Men and women alike: their logic is that their bike is lighter and faster, so "why not". From what I know, and what I've seen, cruisers just seem to have a little more respect for what their machine could cost a person. But that's just my opinion : )

I live down town and don't have any problems with my bike (GSXR Street fighter). Fuck people if they give you a dirty look for parking your bike anywhere . we have saftey isues people don't think about. I would recomend a good lock and ride safe.
