Best burgers in town?

topic posted Mon, September 19, 2005 - 11:43 AM by  offlineCandace
I was driving through reno a couple of weeks ago and stopped by The Nugget downtown for a meal in their little diner. The "Awfukl Awful" special was a great hanburger plopped atop a huge pile of hot french fries. it was one of the best burgers that I have ever had. Only $4.50, too! It was full of very good seasoned beef with lots of condiments included. I don't think it would be easy to do better at home.

It's on my list to stop there again if I'm in Reno.

Now, I've ~heard~ that there are good burger places in Sacramento, but I haven't found them, yet.

I think there's supposed to be some meat locker place that makes burgers that are good. Other then that, has anyone had the Nugget's "Awful Awful"(as in "awfully good" special?

I haven't been there yet, but the Thunder Falls Casino does have a Fattburger in it now, which is a good fix if you're in that specific area.

Of course, you can put me down as a long time fan of Murder ("Redrum") Burgers with cheese and pesto.

A good, reasonably-priced burger can also be had at Hoppy Brewery on Folsom. And contrary to popuar belief, Willies is not all that good. Better to go to an In-n-Out.

On Sacramento burger joints, I gave Hot Rods a try, and wasn't impressed. But I'll give em one more chance. One theory I have to it's success, based on the cheeseburger I had, was it's close aproximation to a bar. And frankly, at 2:00AM, even MacDonalds can taste great.

There's a new Sonic Burger in Woodland. I was up there recently and gave their double meat cheese burger a try. It's pretty good for a chain burger, but nowhere near as good as the Awful Awful in Reno.

the food at the Thunder Valley casino. Some coworkers go there semi-regularly. I've had a couple of them recommend the burgers, too, as well as the steak. the trouble is, I'm almost never in that area, so i dunno about making a special trip up there.

      Anything more central to downtown?

We've done Hamburger Mary's once, and it was OK, but I'd have to go there a couple of times before I'd be able to recommend it...

Awful Awful, now that takes me back a few years, maybe even before you were born. That was a in frequent treat when I was growing up in Sparks. That also used to have a apple pancake that could feed 2 hungry people.

The chocolate milkshake was so big that they had a little "sidecar" glass that they poured the extra amount into, since the blender volume exceeded that of the milkshake glass.

The place definitely has an old-fashioned feel to it. It's not fancy, but bioy, are their items good, inexpensive, yet extremely tasty.

Sorry Jet, but Willie's really isn't that goes. they're trying to be the NorCal version of Tommy's. But frankly, I was am not impressed. The food is over-priced, and really not that good.

As previously stated, better to go to In-n-Out.

*shrug* Willie's I mentioned mostly by reputation...haven't been there in many years, and then actually I was a vegetarian then so all I had were the onion rings, which were in fact quite good.

I do stand behind Nationwide and Jim-Denny's, though. Good meatin'.

I haven't been to either of those yet, but do plan here soon. FWIW Sonic is also quite good.

I tried the Sonic burger in Woodland not long ago. It ~was~ quite good, but still not in the "Awful Awful" league.

someone recently told me about some bar located between Davis and Woodlandand Winters in the middle of nowhere that had good burgers.

I agree that Willies is a bit overrated but it's still pretty good, and a lot closer than In N Out. I've heard Nationwide is the best in town (I think this must be the meat locker place Candace referred to). But for me, I prefer Hot Rod's, by far, plus they're open late. Mmmmmmmmm..............

if that's the case, might as well include The Tumbleweed, which is also on Folsom. They're also great for breakfasts and have the beast bloody marys in town.

Breakfasts = goodness. Bloody Marys = vile evilness likely to make me hurl my guts onto the breakfast table.

                that's right...they contain...TOMATOES!

see, that's what happens when you're northern italian. your food priorities get all messed up. me, I'm getting in touch with my inner Calabrian and growing tomatoes in the backyard for my RED SAUCE!

We've been trying to grow in our backyard. However an examination of the soil determined that it's mostly silt. I'm guessing from the clay-like quality that it's probably the run-off from the old diggins north of here. No matter, nothing a little composting over the winter shouldn't fix.

Oh yeah, I suprised that no one has mentioned the peanut butter burgers that they serve at Al The Wops as of yet.

Trust me, when your hands are shaking for the over-indulgence the night before, and the sun is beaming down on you like god's spotlight, and you're about to ride 200+ miles- nothing beats a good bloody mary to brace you up.

Hey, i'm writing these suggestions all down for places to try! Guess Cafe Melange should be first, since it's supoosed to close, soon.

                  Muchas gracias, everyone.

(Heh...I wonder if i should start a thread for places that make a good mojito and/or margaritas!)

It was the great comedian Joe E Louis who said, "I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't drink. Because when they wake up first thing in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel for the rest of the day."

I've heard that Bloody Marys are the best for hangovers. Being that I hate them with every fiber of my being, I get the WORST hangovers with no relief ever in sight (although I've found Gatorade helps take the edge off).

I know Hamburger Mary's also make a peanut butter burger... Anyone had it? It sounds pretty good to me, I should add that to my to-do list to.

Mojitos...I think Celestins' are pretty durn good. They use real mint, which is key. Of course, it gets all caught up in my braces, not so good.

BTW, Jetrock, don't let the blonde hair fool ya, I'm from Southern Italy (Naples & Sicily). I'm not sure where my Anti-Tomatoism came from.

Best burgers in town? My place.

Veggie burger cooked on the grill. Barbecue sauce. Homemade bread and butter pickles. Melted sharp cheddar cheese. Carmelized onions. All on a toasted whole wheat bun.

No offence, but store-bought veggie burgers cooked at home can never compare with many of the places we've listed. If you know of a few places that make their own veggie patties, I'm sure many people, including my wife would appreciate it. I believe Redrum does.

For those who live a life like mine, another good place to grab a bite is The Plainfield Station, outside of Davis.

There's some place on the Sacramento River (right side of the river, going north) that looks good, and serve a LOT of fries on the side. But it was only a beer stop for us. At this time, I can't remember the name, nor can I vouch for the food. IT was something like The Galley or The Dinghy (NOT the Sturgeon).
