After hearing about the rape in midtown I was wondering
Where are good places to get pepper spray, personal safety items or take self defense classes?

Re: Mace/Pepper spray?
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 3:42 PMYou can get pepper spray from uniform shops that sell police/guard/correctional officer uniforms.
Some hardware store might carry it, too.
Ask about defense classes at various karate studios. Moore's studios come to mind. -

Re: Mace/Pepper spray?
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 5:45 PMUnderstand if you carry mace or pepper spray you *will* get it in your own eyes if you ever have to use it. Do a test run on a calm day - spray it outside and see if/how it affects you.
There's a class called "Model Mugging", I did a quick search and you may have to go to the Bay Area to find it. They specifically train you to take out a would be attacker. A lot of martial arts don't practice full contact, realistic situations.
Here's a great website for learning how to properly take care of yourself.

The best self defense is knowing how not to get into a bad situation in the first place. -

Re: Mace/Pepper spray?
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 6:36 PMThat's why I suggested Moore's.
A guy I used to know taught at a Moore's in Modesto.
He told me that Moore's was of the philosopy that it's stuff to use if you need it.
It wasn't designed to be tournament play or "just exercise".
Hopefully, they've retained that philosophy.
