Just wanted to put the word out on a kickass show this Friday night @ Marilyn's. The Bennys (www.myspace.com/thebennys) open the show at 9pm. They're a SAMMMIE winning R&B/Funk act with heavy doses of chill and good vibes.

2Me plays at 10pm. Based in Sacramento, these folk 'n roll troubadours have toured from Seattle to Savannah, Boston to Austin to San Diego, and a hell of a lot of spots in between. They've played in the back woods of North Carolina, the bayous of Mississippi, and the cold Mountains of Montana. Kick it.

Sugar Shack will bring it on home to funky town starting at 11:30pm. Singer Becca Neunebel's voice has graced countless area recordings, and even ended up on a handful of internationally distributed video game sound tracks. The groove is satiable from start to finish, and you're guaranteed to be a hot, sweaty, wigglin' mofo if you take advantage of the atmosphere they're bringin.

Come join us. It will definitely NOT suck.

It seems like people either already have their own cliq and stick to it, or just don't say anything to anybody at all. What gives?

I haven't been living in the area for too horribly long so I was hoping for some pointers. What I'm wondering is how motorcycle friendly is Sac?

I really don't see that many other urban bikers here, is it uncommon? Parking seems a bit scarce too, a few apartments that I've seen so far at least have some protected parking or spots that only a bike could fit into so I don't think that finding a home base will be a problem but other places might be. I'd just hate to see my bike run over, again...

I would totally ride a bicycle if the time and distances were different between work and school, but I can't so a bike is the next economical choice for me.

Any thoughts?

I moved back here about a year ago and recently added a boxer to my family. We love to go rollerblading together but so far have only gone around the 'hood. I'm looking for dog friendly parks, not dog park, where we could go and where the asphalt isn't all beat up and in bad need of resurfacing, like it was at Carmichael park. Hiking spots would also be appreciated.

I've looked online at the parks webpages but they don't give much information about rollerblading so I was hoping for some personal experiences.
It was full of very good seasoned beef with lots of condiments included. I don't think it would be easy to do better at home.

Hello and good morning,

In 2001 I decided I couldnt live in the Bay area any more and moved to Arizona...... there were several reason why this move made sense to me at the time (separation and divorce makes people do weird things). I have had many wonderful experiences living in AZ but I am ready to move back to the best place on earth (Northern CA) I am looking at Hayward Sacramento, and Sonoma County (where I am from). I am looking for housing and a job in Sacramento. The condo has to be a in an area that I feel safe walking my way to friendly dog at night near Sac State (no more than 8 miles or so), preferably close to a dog park and close to a freeway that will get me to 80. I also need to be close to a belly dance studio. I know nothing about the neighborhoods I am finding condos in (in my price range) but do have a general idea of where to stay away from thanks to a friend. I also know that like Phoenix and Mesa you can have a side of the street that is a nice area and the other side can be not so nice Anyone have any suggestions?

Seriously, I'm looking for feedback on this.
We have a position in our office that is impossible to find a decent reliable and dedicated person for. I wonder if the boss is asking too much? This position is nowhere near what my duties are, so I'm not sure.
Basically, this person - I'll say He, because there is some physically demanding stuff, but a strong healthy woman could certainly do it - has to:
1) assist in the manufacture of braces, minor repair etc. this also includes mixing and pouring plaster to make a mold of the patients body, then form the hot plastic around it, which results in a custom made body brace (for people with spinal fractures or after surgery) Add padding, straps, and trim edges for comfort.
2) delivery driver - pick up and deliver (in the company van) back and foot/ankle braces to our local manufacturing company. Also pick up our orders of sheets of (heavy) plastic and plaster/vermiculite that we use in the manufacture of braces here, too.
3) maintain stock items. Off the shelf wrist, knee, neck braces and stuff that we use in the repair of same - like velcro strapping, liners for knee braces and other supplies. When an item is given to a patient, he needs to be sure it's ordered and replaced in stock. He needs to let the front office know when a custom item has arrived by UPS, because that patient probably has an appt in a day or 2 to pick it up.

He doesn't have to see patients, no computer work, and definitely plenty of down time. This is a great office; laid back, competent patient care, and if someone is interested in sports injury, paraplegia effects, and general orthopedic bracing protocol, they could learn ALOT for their future career. My boss is a self made man, really nice guy, and he is excellent with evaluating body mechanics support. He would love to mentor someone competent, who is interested, and willing to WORK while learning.

Why can we not find a person capable of showing up on time, doing the work, and BATHING before coming back again the next day?

(if you know someone interested in employment, pm me with info, and I'll have my boss call for interview) Office in Carmichael

My dentist sold his practice to focus only on his specialty of pediatric dentistry, and now I need 2 new crowns! In calling for details to the new staff, I'm told the new doc doesn't even offer nitrous gas for procedures. This may be not a big deal to some, but to me it is a red flag on the quality of general care provided. I'm not looking forward to paying my share of cost for this expensive work AND dealing with the next days muscle spasms and stiff neck that used to happen to me before the miracle of my introduction to 'happy gas.'
Anyway, my day has already been full of the anxiety of PPO coverage, In or Out of Network provider, and the list of dentists provided by my insurance company as preferred plan members. It's such a crapshoot to find a competent medical professional these days, so if anyone can suggest a dentist they trust and are happy with, I'd appreciate it!

I have a fellow friend, many of you may know him from Burning man as Halcyon. He has a weekly group hug called hug nation. Halcyon is taking the group hug on tour, and is looking for a place for a good group hug. Does anyone know a good location in Sacramento where we can all get together for a group hug?

What is hug nation?(www.hugnation.com)
Hug Nation is a world-wide Group Hug.

Those pesky oceans keep us from doing the weekly hug physically, so we do it virtually. Thousands of people around the world gather in front of computers to hug themselves and the people around them at a set time. Rather than a shared physical space, it is a shared mental space.

Regardless of where you are on Tuesday at 1-pm (PST), you can join the Group Hug.

Squeeze yourself in your car or in the supermarket. Hug your spouse or co-worker. Just visualize the thousands worldwide who are joining you at that moment.

Think of it as a sort of prayer -- a communal expression of compassion. It is a weekly reminder that we are connected and we all far more similar than we are different. Everyone can use a hug.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m., music starts at noon and continues till 5:00 p.m. We meet at the Dante Club where there's good food and a full-service bar. Admission is $7 for members and $12 for non-members. Students (age 12-20): student members $3; student non-members $5. Under 12: free. (Directions below.)

You'll find three rooms playing live music simultaneously! Our guest musicians play on the Main Stage, our "Gold Card Musicians" play in Le Cabaret, and then there are the jam sessions that take place in the Tailgate Room. Once a month, we feature a local youth band on Main Stage at noon (Set 1), then again in the Tailgate Room for Set 3. (Five sets x 3 rooms = a lotta music!)
Those attending any of Northern California-based CLAUDIA'S ASHES' live rituals are often left torn deciding between the two, as frontwoman Stephanie Michelle's voice transitions seemlessly between ethereal singing and menancing metal growls. She moves, eyes closed, in a trance as her band churns out the heart of her music behind her. Sean "Bug" Flynn thrashes about, his fingers moving like fire over the fretboard of his guitar, while Kerry Fisher keeps the low-end fluid and precise.

Since 2002, the music of Claudia's Ashes has slowly evolved into what it is today: dark, beautiful, unique. Although a one-woman project behind the scenes (Stephanie Michelle writes and records all of the music on her lonesome), Stephanie credits the newfound energy and life that has been inserted into her blend of goth, electronic and metal music to her live bandmates. The music iteself simply cannot be lumped into any on genre, as it encompasses a range of styles so as to make pin-pointing and labeling a difficult task. With soaring synths, crunchy industrial guitar riffs and melancholic vocals, it's no wonder that fans of several different musical genres adore this band. Covering topics such as lust, despair, heartbreak, horror and fantasy, the lyrics are just as brutally honest as the music.
But Ive been here alomost two years, after relocating from L.A. and this seems to be a very confused and drastically polarized town, enroute to big cityhood. But it wont stop and ask for directions cause it is afraid to grow up. Seems that Ol' Sactown still wants to think of itself as this quaint lil country cowtown. Taxpayers vote against anything that might lure prosperity and cultural expansion. The streets are too narrow and most dont lead to anything worth the trip. There is no covenience in metro nightlife because businesses care only about the state employee dollar and therefore, seem to be too lazy or fearful to operate beyond 6pm.

Public transit is equally inadequate and seems interested in serving only itself, being unavailable to typical public needs. Socially there are only two groups: The snobbish civil employees who dont know that our tax dollars pay for all those croissants at 'La Bou' And the broke down homelss, tweaking depressives lurking about the north downtown/16th street areas. I could keep going but I think Shaquille O'Neal was right: Maybe "L.A. should be the Capitol".

Fri Apr 20, 2007 1:49 am (PST)
Well it looks like the weatherman is going to cooperate after all . . . at least on Saturday, so Bikes & Brats is go for launch!

This is the "ride" that makes learning fun . . . the ride that feeds your mind, your body and your passion for cycling!

From 10:00am to 12:00pm it's bicycle maintenance classes hosted by BikeHiker Steve Loebach of Carmichael Cycle, including (as time permits):

1) Changing a tire/ flat repair

2) Wheel true/spoke repair (including making it home with a broken spoke)

3) Chain checking, cleaning and lubrication
4) Brake Check and adjustment

5) Fixing shift problems ("autoshifting" , chain jump, etc.)

6) General Bike Cleaning and Lubrication

7) Recommended Bike Maintenance Schedule

The class is "hands on", so be prepared to get down and dirty with your bike. If possible, please bring tools, including (if you have them):

1) Tire levers

2) Floor pump

3) Multitool

Otherwise, you can share with others. You may want to bring a few $$$s too if you need to purchase tools, lube or ???.

Then at noon, we'll be serving up FREE Bratwurst (German hot dogs) and Louisiana Hot Links for lunch, expertly prepared by none other than our own, Mr. Bar-B-Que himself, John Kramer.

After lunch, our Bicycling Diva, Paulette Houser, will lead a choice of 26 or 32 mile flat rides in the area, and get you back in time to avoid the promised evening drizzle.

So make it a perfect bicycling day, perhaps the only dry one for a while! :-)

We're meeting at Five Points Shopping Center, BEHIND Carmichael Cycles were there's plenty of parking (take the driveway behind Hollywood Video and follow it to the back).

FUN, FOOD and FROLIC, it's all there on Saturday at Bikes & Brats. Be there or be square! 10:00 am sharp.

When I first started dancing as a young woman, I thought belly dance was a fun dance, a way to stay fit and was a good study break. But over the years, 16 to be exact, as I have matured and hopefully gotten older and wiser as well, I have come to the realization that belly dance is a beautiful marriage between the spiritual and the sensual/body. It has become almost a form of moving meditation for me. I feel connected to something greater to myself and often experience a form of ecstacy and pure joy difficult to describe.

Anyway, I have been so inspired and in many ways healed by this ancient and most beautiful art form and frustrated with other people's perception of it as a sleazy dance or sexy entertainment at best, that with my Masters in Counseling and my expertise as professional dancer, I decided to write a book, Belly Dance Wisdom, sharing with others, especially the general public, how the dance has the capacity to connect a woman to her powerful female wisdom and to a female spirituality sorely lacking in our culture. I am pleased to say, the Sacramento interviewed me on the book, see below, and so I sincerely hope the word gets out so I can begin to uplift the dance as the purest form of art, a transforming healing art. It is my dream that one day the dance will be as respected as ballet and seen as the amazing dance art as well as healing art that it is. No other dance can merge the sensual/sexual aspects of a women with her soul/spirituality as this dance!

There's an irish music session happening onthe last Tuesday of each month.

That's tonight.

So, if you want to grab a pint of beer and a plate of food and sit and mellow out to some good Irish traditional tunes, head over there.

The last time I was there, the music was already started by 7PM and went on past 9.

A few months ago, a new upscale apartment complex opened up across the street from The Distillery. The people that moved in are complaining about the noise and the city has imposed a sound ordinance. There has been live music at The Distillery for 15 years and now some new rich pricks are trying shut it down.
The only way to keep it alive is to soundproof the venue.
Friday, December 1st there will be a benefit show to do just that, so come out and show your support for Sacto music
